Womenswear
A second-generation Chinese-American born and raised in New York, Sandy Liang debuts at Lane Crawford this season with a worldwide exclusive capsule collection. Liang is loved for her distinctly laidback style and designs that ooze an easy confidence. Her romantic capsule collection features shirting pieces inspired by everyday workwear essentials with a touch of humour and downtown attitude. Wavy hemmed dresses and spliced shirts exude a playful nonchalance, while quirky details such as ruffles, stripes, and bows play on dualistic qualities of hard and soft. Created for modern city girls seeking elevated wardrobe classics, Sandy Liang’s new capsule collection strikes the perfect balance between personality and sophistication.
The newest name in Lane Crawford’s Created in China programme, where we nurture and champion emerging Chinese designers, is Xiao Li, a critically acclaimed knitwear label founded by China-born, London-based designer, Xiao Li. The brand was shortlisted for the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2015. Celebrated for its experimental, sculptural take on knitwear, Xiao Li’s colourfully voluminous designs feature innovative yarns and textures and are inspired by modern architectural structures. Garments are deconstructed, giving the illusion of being unfinished, and jackets are created from an embossed technical fabric that feature stepped hems, reflecting the idea of speed.
Newcomer Monse, by designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, debuted last year to a line-up of high-profile industry insiders with a collection of modern wardrobe staples that exude an easy elegance with a touch of glamour. Having spent a combined 18 years under the tutelage of Oscar de la Renta before starting their own label, Kim and Garcia are well versed in the art of female dressing. Defined by reworked shirting and separates, Monse’s Autumn Winter 2016 collection features sharp, wearable pieces inspired by vintage men’s suiting with asymmetric cuts and deconstructed tailoring to create new shirting staples.
Menswear
By Walid catapults the modern-day philosophy of sustainability to the forefront with its one-of-a-kind garments crafted with handpicked antique fabrics. Created by British-Iraqi designer, Walid Al Damirji, By Walid transforms 18th and 19th century fabrics into contemporary couture pieces, each one unique in its own right and embodying delicate, artisanal originality. Transporting customers on a journey through history, By Walid is a collection of rare, romantic creations that finds beauty in the old, the discarded, and the forsaken.
By Walid Wan Hung
The newest menswear designer to join Lane Crawford’s Created in China programme is Wan Hung, founded by London-based designer Wan Hung Cheung in 2014. The emerging label is defined by its classic silhouettes and sharp tailoring, where traditional wardrobe essentials are reinvented through innovative use of textiles and prints as well as contemporary detailing. Originally hailing from Hainan, China, Cheung juxtaposes the natural beauty of his hometown with the modern-day urban experience to create luxury collections that are sophisticated yet playful.
The Fit Room
The highly anticipated Fenty x Puma collection by music superstar, Rihanna, also makes its debut at Lane Crawford this season. The athleisure-meets-streetwear collection sees Rihanna’s personal aesthetic injected into bold sportswear pieces featuring dramatic proportions, genderless designs, and deconstructed looks. Challenging traditional male and female silhouettes, Rihanna “blurs the lines between genders that are oftentimes too rigid for her fashion tastes”, creating maximalist-style pieces punctuated by gothic elements and a heavy dose of attitude. From hoodie dresses and reinterpreted bomber jackets to oversized coats and skin-tight jumpsuits, the first Fenty x Puma collection makes a bold statement with its amped-up take on traditional sportswear essentials.

Rhié was established in 2011 by New York-based Rie Yamagata, and began as a dedicated knitwear label. The collection quickly evolved to fully encompass the breadth of a modern wardrobe for the everyday with focus on unique fabrics, both bold and minimal, that enhance the innate nature of the materials used. This Autumn Winter 2016, Yamagata turned to a space age and utopian science fiction theme with a dark and futuristic take on wardrobe essentials.
Echo says: “Quality fabrics, attention to detail and an innate sense of minimalist cool are what I love about this brand. This skirt has an irregular cut but a fluidity cut for draping. It’s a style that can work with loose-fit oversize knitwear, denim or leather jackets.”
