Korean artist collective meets fashion label meets gallery, Studio Concrete, may have one of the country’s most popular (and fashionable) young stars as its founder. But that’s just chapter one of the story. It’s the ingenious, multi-genre projects, mixing art, fashion, music and pop culture, which have made it one of the coolest things to come out of Korea in recent years.
Its founder, actor Yoo Ah-in, simply calls it an ongoing “art project”. “We do art collaborations, design clothes and create various, multi-media content,” he tells us. “But in the end, our aim is to have creative freedom and an ‘out-of-the-box’ attitude to art, design and fashion.”
Since opening its doors two years ago, this unique, multipurpose space in central Seoul has produced one intriguing (and highly successful) project after another. The “How Do You Feel 1-10” sweatshirt collection, for one – featuring a number patch on the back describing your current mood (1 being ‘low’ and 10 being ‘high’) - was an instant hit with streetwear lovers.
For this coming holiday season, Studio Concrete has collaborated with Lane Crawford on an exclusive capsule collection including sweaters, hoodies, T-shirts and jackets featuring graphics that reinterpret the idea of space travel. “We chose space exploration as the concept for this collection to symbolise endless creativity and curiosity,” says Yoo. While we won’t be able to enjoy space itself just yet, at least with this limited edition collection, we can still get a taste of K-culture cool that's out of this world.

Kick it back with fashion’s latest obsession with skate style

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what kick started fashion’s current love affair with skateboarding. Some put it on the resurgence of all things ‘90s (now old enough to be new) and ‘70s (when surf and skate style really began to flourish) while others point to the subculture’s effortless ease and carefree attitude that appeals to today’s street style icons as much as it did the youth during the sun-bleached So-Cal era of Dogtown and the Z-Boys.
But beyond the ubiquitous Thrasher tee - now a style staple for the fashion set - there are a number of labels that are pushing skater style into new directions. Los Angeles-based Rip N Dip for example began when Ryan O’Connor and a group of his friends at a skate camp wanted to wear something other than camp gear. Since then, it has come to embody the playful energy and humour around skate culture.
There are a number of labels that are pushing skater style into new directions. Pound & Co., a subculture lifestyle brand established by a collective of creators from Toronto and Seoul, debuts its first collection with Lane Crawford while Japanese label Have A Good Time has been a skate sell-out.
