RU: You are very much involved in Life Values and projects that touch people. What has been your most rewarding project to date and why?
YB: The project that’s like a gift everyday for me is definitely the hundred-dollar laptop, or One Laptop per Child (OLPC). There are 3 million children that have one, and it is really incredible. I’m constantly working with Nicholas Negroponte — we’re close to being ready with a tablet version in the next few weeks or months, which will be the next version of this tool for education.
RU: So do you think designing products are about creating something that gives back?
YB: Part of design is a gift. It is essentially giving function, aesthetics or emotion. I see it less as a purely commercial thing of making and selling, but the pursuit of providing people with experiences.
RU: What is your experience as a European designer living in San Francisco?
YB: What I think design needs is an environment of openness, research, and experimentation mixed with new ideas, businesses and entrepreneurs. That’s what I find in the San Francisco bay area. But honestly, design is a global practice and there are incredible things happening in the most unlikely places. Design is about creating qualities that are unique and breakthroughs that become universal and appreciated everywhere.
RU: You spent over four years working on the Leaf lamp, which we sell in our stores, and perfecting the product. This shows true dedication and passion that few today would have the patience for. What keeps you going?
YB: To practice design well, you have to anchor yourself in these long-term relationships. Good design happens over relationships that are built around trust and abandonment: clients abandon themselves to your vision and you abandon yourself to their abilities and those relationships. It has to be a process of in-depth, ongoing research and relationship that bear these kind of extraordinary fruits that become classics and representative of the times.
RU: Since opening the new home stores here in Hong Kong and Beijing 4 years ago, I have worked with my team of buyers to teach the consumer that “sustainability” is not a trend, but a conscious way of life. How do you feel sustainability plays an important role in the future of design?
YB: I think everything is going to be remade with sustainability as a filter. Every manufacturing process, logistics system, distribution and retail system is going to be rethought, and design is going to have a huge role to play in this transformation that’s going to happen in the next 15 to 20 years. Sustainability will become second nature to design and applied to everything. It is the only way that our economic system will make sense, high-end or low-end. Design has to make it better and more compelling. It’s not about making it less.
