ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

JACKY TSAI: In-Store Installation & Limited-Edition Print Poster at May 9 Event
Born in Shanghai in 1984, Jacky Tsai relocated to London to study MA Illustration at Central St. Martins after completing a BA at the China Academy of Art. Uniquely combining Eastern-style craftsmanship with contemporary Western pop art, Tsai quickly impacted the fashion world with his iconic Floral Skull design for Alexander McQueen. Graduating in 2008, he made his mark on London’s art scene with his debut solo show in 2010 at Notting Hill’s Salon Contemporary. A dynamic artist who constantly evolves his style, the 29-year-old is now focused on taking his art to the next level, creating his blend of conceptual and elegant creations in different mediums that re-imagine concepts of beauty.

SHANTELL MARTIN: In-Store Installation & Live Illustration at May 9 Event
From London to Tokyo and New York, internationally acclaimed visual artist Shantell Martin expands conventional definitions of drawing and animation to transform visual experience in the design, fashion and music worlds. Her dazzling light projections have been featured in iconic spots such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, megaclubs in Tokyo and Russia, and on gigantic screens at Shibuya/Harajuku crossings in Tokyo. The UK-born Martin has infiltrated popular culture worldwide — she’s been cast as herself on the TV show, Gossip Girl; interviewed on CNN and appeared on an NBC morning show; named by French Glamour as New York’s 2011 “coolest it girl”; and her hand-illustrated bedroom walls graced the cover of the New York Times home section in May 2012.

QUESTA: Window Installations
Que Houxo, aka Questa, is a Japanese street artist-turned-mural specialist. He began his career in 1999 as a painter, with a background in graffiti, and has since honed his craft on canvases, live paintings and mural pieces, with appearances and commissions around Asia and Europe. His main series of works, titled “Day and Night”, often reference flowers and urban-style art style — with results being incredible luminous installations using fluorescent paint and UV lights.

WINNIE LUI: In-Store Installations
Hong Kong-born Winnie Lui is a multi-disciplinary designer (costume, jewellery and product) as well as a fashion stylist and artist. A graduate of Fashion Communications and Promotion from London’s Central St. Martin’s, she has previously worked with jewellery designer Lara Bohinc, actresses/singers Gigi Leung and Miriam Yeung, and photographer Wing Shya. Notable, often charity-related, past works include designing a set of limited-edition chandeliers for Innermost in 2007; creating a “Mini Lui” 1000% Bearbrick for CIGE 2008 x MILK in Beijing; hosting her 2009 “Winnified Wonderland” exhibition for the Adidas Beijing Sanlitun store; and collaborating with On Pedder for a 2011 limited-edition collection.

MARK GOSS: In-Store Installation
After studying graphic design in his native London and then beginning his professional career from Antwerp in Belgium, Mark Goss is now based in Hong Kong where he works as an artist and designer. Not limited to any particular medium but with a penchant for graphic mark-making and using found objects, Goss creates typographic and figurative images inspired by his environment and experiences.

(Hong Kong – January 14, 2013) Lane Crawford debuts its ground-breaking first-ever 3D campaign for Spring/Summer 2013. Shot by the pioneering fashion image-maker Nick Knight, the campaign embraces technology, fashion and photography of the highest level. Giving this latest campaign the 3D scan treatment, Knight coupled with motion capture that features this season’s campaign girl Ming Xi, rendered and animated in a futuristic way never seen before.
The Technology
Fifteen years ago, Knight became fascinated with 3D scanning, a technique used in filmmaking and video game production, to capture biometric data of an object. He has since boldly applied this technique within a fashion context, creating 3D scans of the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Lady Gaga.
“We're trying to push the frontiers of what technology can do within fashion. What's exciting is that Lane Crawford is brave enough to put their weight behind it. It's leading by example and that's great.” Nick Knight
The Process
Ming Xi was set the challenge of posing as still as a statue, as a piece of imposing apparatus rotated around her, capturing her exact features and angles. Every slight movement would cause glitches in the 3D renderings, which Knight found exciting. The two-day shoot was an ongoing experiment where the outcome was often unpredictable, particularly when Ming Xi had to be motion captured, with the corresponding data mapped to the still imagery, in order to obtain the final warped animations.
The Girl
Ming Xi has been on fashion’s centre stage since entering China’s Elite Model Look competition in 2009. This is Ming’s third campaign for Lane Crawford and this season, she is the solo star, braving her way through a new fashion frontier of 3D scanning and motion capture.
The Fashion
The revered stylist Katy England set the avant-garde style agenda in the nineties, working as Fashion Director at Dazed & Confused and AnOther magazine. Pulling together four diverse runway looks that represent a polarised Spring/Summer 2013 season, including ornate honeycomb embroidery from Alexander McQueen, a boxy Proenza Schouler perforated leather ensemble, a trail of delicate chiffon contrasted with tailored trousers from Haider Ackermann and a pale blue exercise of sleek lines from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.
The Team
Hairstylist Sam McKnight, make-up artist Val Garland and nail technician Marian Newman were the experienced triumvirate that came together for this shoot. Together, they have worked as a trio with Nick Knight regularly on shoots for Vogue as well as for various fashion campaigns.
